What Your First Week Here Looks Like
September 13, 2026 — Breathe CrossFIt
September is when people finally do the thing they’ve been thinking about since January. The mornings in Derry are cool again, the summer schedule is over, and something clicks. If that’s you, here’s exactly what your first week looks like — no surprises.
What happens before any workout
Your first appointment is called a No Sweat Intro, and the name is literal. You don’t train. You don’t need gym clothes. We sit down and have a conversation about you and your goals, figure out what success looks like to you, and how to get there. That’s the whole thing.
This is where you tell us the honest stuff — the knee that’s been cranky since 2019, the fact that you’ve never touched a barbell, the schedule that only allows 5:30am. None of it disqualifies you. It just tells us how to coach you. As one member wrote in a Google review: “For newbies they work with you one on one to start to give you a chance to get comfortable, understand the structure, and build confidence before jumping into group classes.”
Your first class
Our CrossFit classes are 60 minutes, coach-led start to finish, and usually run 5 to 15 people. They’re high intensity and built around strength and conditioning — but intensity is relative to you, not to the person next to you.
That’s what scaling means here. Everyone in the room is doing the same workout, with the loads and movements adjusted to what your body can currently do well. The focus is always on moving well before moving fast or heavy. A coach will tell you to slow down or drop weight long before they tell you to push. That’s not you failing the workout — that’s the workout being coached properly.
What nobody tells you
The hardest part isn’t the training. It’s walking through the door the first time. A member put it better than we could in a Google review: “Trying a new gym—especially something like CrossFit—can be really intimidating, but at Breathe from day one, the atmosphere is welcoming and genuinely beginner-friendly, which makes it so much easier to get started without feeling overwhelmed.”
And you’re allowed to not know things. Another member wrote: “I’ve always struggled in the gym with not knowing what to do and it’s great to have someone like Toni and a gym like Breathe where it’s okay to not know and there’s no awkwardness asking for help.”
The other thing: this doesn’t stop after week one. We check in with members regularly to see how progress is going, adjust when it needs adjusting, and share the week’s wins in our members-only Facebook group. You’re not handed a schedule and left alone.
How to start
We’re open Monday through Friday, 5:00am to 7:00pm, so early shifts and after-work windows both work. Beyond group classes, we also coach personal training and nutrition — but you don’t need to decide any of that yet.
