What a CrossFit Class Really Is

September 11, 2026 — Breathe CrossFIt

September in Derry has a way of resetting everyone’s schedule. The mornings are cool again, the kids are back in school, and people start looking for something steadier than “I’ll get to it.” That’s usually when someone emails us asking what our CrossFit classes actually are. Fair question. Here’s the honest answer.

What a class actually looks like

Sixty minutes, start to finish, with a coach leading the whole thing. Group sizes run between 5 and 15 people, which is small enough that the coach knows your name and can see what your reps look like instead of shouting at a crowd.

The work is high intensity and it’s built around strength and conditioning. That means you’ll spend part of the hour getting stronger and part of it getting your heart rate up, and a coach is there the entire time to tell you what to do, how to do it, and when to back off. If something in the day’s plan doesn’t fit your body, your shoulder, or how much sleep you got, we adjust it. That’s not a special favor. That’s the job.

Classes run Monday through Friday between 5:00am and 7:00pm, so there’s room for the pre-work crowd and the after-work crowd both.

Who it’s for

Our own description is the plainest one we’ve got: coach-led 60-minute group classes, 5 to 15 people, high intensity, focused on strength and conditioning. If that sounds like the kind of structure you’ve been missing, you’re who this is for.

In practice, that’s people who want someone else to write the plan. People who do better with a few familiar faces in the room at 5am. People who want to get stronger and fitter and would rather be coached than guess. You do not need a base of fitness to walk in. You need to show up and be willing to be coached.

The myth worth killing

The myth is that CrossFit means going as heavy and as fast as you can, as often as you can, until something gives.

Not here. We care more about moving well than moving fast and heavy — that’s not marketing copy, it’s how we coach. Intensity is earned, not assumed. We check in with members regularly and adjust the plan when it needs adjusting, because a plan you can repeat for years beats a plan that wrecks you in six weeks. Every week we also share everyone’s wins in our members-only Facebook group, and those wins are rarely the biggest number in the room.

How it connects to the other programs

Group class is the backbone, and the other two programs bolt onto it.

Personal training is built around your goals specifically — useful if you want dedicated time on something, or if one-on-one simply suits you better than a group. Nutrition is there to help you make better food choices without the overwhelm: building habits, improving energy, and feeling more confident in and out of the gym. Training hard and eating like you’re not training is a common way to stall, and this is how we fix that.

Plenty of members use one. Plenty use all three. You can see how it’s all structured on our memberships and pricing pages.
