How to Choose a Gym in Derry, NH
September 11, 2026 — Breathe CrossFIt
September is when the questions start. The kids are back in school, the mornings in Derry are finally cool enough to want to move again, and “I’ll walk more this summer” has run its course. So here’s an honest guide to picking a gym around here — including the part where we tell you we might not be the right one for you.
The kinds of gyms you’re choosing between
Broadly, you’ve got three options. A big-box gym gives you rows of machines, long hours and a low monthly price. That’s a genuinely good deal if you already know what you’re doing and you want cheap, flexible access. If you don’t know what to do, though, it’s easy to spend a year on the same three machines and wonder why nothing changed.
A boutique studio does one thing and does it with energy. It’s fun, it’s easy to follow along, and the hour goes fast. What you often don’t get is someone tracking whether you’re actually getting stronger over months, or adjusting anything for your particular shoulder.
A CrossFit box — which is what we are — is coach-led group training: strength and conditioning mixed together, in a small group, following a program somebody wrote on purpose. You give up some anonymity and some flexibility. You get coaching.
Questions worth asking anywhere
Who is coaching this class, and will they be watching me? How many people are in a class? What happens if I can’t do a movement — does the plan change, or do I just sit it out? Do the hours actually fit my week, not my ideal week? And ask to see the exit terms in writing before you join, not after: ours are on the cancellation and membership hold pages.
What makes Breathe different — and who we’re not for
We coach group CrossFit classes, personal training and nutrition, and we care more about moving well than moving fast and heavy. Classes are 60 minutes, coach-led, and run between 5 and 15 people. We check in with members regularly, adjust the plan when it needs adjusting, and share everyone’s wins in our members-only Facebook group each week. Our nutrition program is there to help you build habits and energy without the overwhelm.
Now the honest part. We’re open Monday to Friday, 5:00am to 7:00pm. If you need weekend or midnight access, we’re not your gym. If you want to put your headphones in and run your own program without a coach in your business, a big-box membership will make you happier and cost you less. And if you want to be run into the ground with no regard for how the movement looks, that’s not how we coach. You can see how we structure things on the about page and what it costs on memberships and pricing.
How to try one properly
Don’t judge a gym on one class — you’ll either be flattered or terrified, and neither tells you much. Start with a conversation. Ours is the free No Sweat Intro: we sit down, talk about you and your goals, figure out what success looks like to you, and map out how to get there.
Then give it two or three weeks at the times you’d realistically train, not the times you wish you could. Notice whether a coach knows your name by week two, and whether anything in your plan changed because of something you said. That’s the whole test. Get in touch and we’ll book your intro.
